With deep sorrow we watch the consequences of the recent tsunami on the Sumatra and Java islands in Indonesia with hundreds dead and wounded.

Even more so, it causes us great rage the revelations that many people could have been saved if the alert system for timely removal of the world was in operation. Unfortunately, it turns out once again that in this system of exploitation and profit, people’s lives are less valuable than the profits of the few. similar is the situation in our country, Greece, due to the lack of measures to protect the life and health of the people and workers.

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), representing 95 million workers in 130 different countries across the world, expresses its most heartfelt condolences to the people of Indonesia after the tsunami caused by a volcanic eruption on 22 December.

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing more than 95 million workers in 130 countries of the 5 continents strongly condemns the plan of NIKE for thousand layoffs, starting with the dismissals of 1,500 unionized workers at the Kaho Indah Citra Garment factory in Indonesia.

The WFTU, which is the militant voice of 95 million members in 130 countries in the five continents, expresses its sincere condolences to the people of Indonesia, and in particular, to the relatives of the 844 people who lost their lives because of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that stroke the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. At the same time, 600 people were hospitalized and 48.000 were displaced while severe damages were caused in buildings and infrastructure.

The WFTU expresses its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the people who lost their lives by the earthquake which struck in Indonesian island, Lombok on Sunday morning. At least 14 people lost their lives and nearly 700 people were trapped. In addition, more than a thousand homes are damaged.
