The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India issued the following statement on January 23, 2018 condemning the Election Commission’s recommendation to disqualify 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for holding ‘office of profit’.

The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly condemns the unilateral and hurried move of the Election Commission to recommend the disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs for holding ‘office of profit’.

The Commission did not bother to hear the AAP leaders on the issue.

The same criteria of disqualifying the MLAs who held parliamentary secretary positions in states has not been followed. The decision to disqualify is taken in a hurry on the day of retirement of the Chief Election Commissioner who was also seen earlier as pro-BJP government at the Centre.

Hence it appears that the Commission and in particular the Chief Election Commissioner A K Joti acted in a manner which makes one conclude that the recommendation was a political one taken to please the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
