The Democratic Socialists of America stands in solidarity with the Chilean people in the face of massive human rights violations in the wake of the recent uprising that has moved to a general strike.

The Chilean government and its billionaire president Sebastian Piñera — who himself made a fortune off the so-called liberalization of the country — have reacted violently to mass protest resulting from decades of frustration with uneven distribution of wealth and empty promises since the end of the military dictatorship. Military rule ended Chile’s democratic road to socialism under President Salvador Allende and his Popular Unity coalition.

Fifteen people killed and 5000 arrested in nationwide anti-government protests

In only a matter of days, a seemingly unexceptional protest over rising metro fares in Santiago has escalated quickly into a full blown national crisis in Chile.

Unshackled and fearless, protesters angry after years of austerity and worsening inequality have railed against the elistist regime of Sebastián Piñera for his profligacy and corruption, and now for repressive response to the protests.

The head of State and Government, Nicolás Maduro Moros, said that the social outbreak that the Republic of Chile is going through is the result of the exclusionary and repressive model imposed by the neo-liberalism that has been accumulating since the Pinochet dictatorship.

During the closing ceremony of the I International Congress of Communes, Social Movements and Popular Power, which was held at the Theater “Teresa Carreño”, in Caracas, Maduro said that the situation in Chile only demonstrates the protest of a people who have lived in the inequality.

The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, sympathized with the people of Chile and advocated the cessation of violence and police repression that is executed in that country, after the declaration of a curfew in Santiago (capital city), Chacabuco and the Valparaíso Region.

“All my solidarity with the noble Chilean people, who are in resistance against the neoliberal political criminals implemented by capitalism. I advocate the cessation of violence and the brutal repression that violates the DD.HH. of the population ¡A hug to Chile!”, Said the head of state in his account on the social network Twitter @NicolasMaduro.

The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela repudiates the silence of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations Organizations (UN), Michelle Bachelet, before the repressive acts of police and military forces against the Chilean people.

The Executive Vice-president of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, through her account on the social network Twitter @DrodriguezVen, condemned that there is no pronouncement from the specialized agency of the United Nations system dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights in the world.

The president of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC), Diosdado Cabello and the vice president of International Affairs of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Adán Chávez, received a delegation from the Mapuche indigenous people of Chile, in support of the struggle the native peoples of America face for the recognition of their cultural identity and recovery of their territory.

To the Mapuche people:
To the Chilean people:
To the originary peoples of the Americas:
To the International Sixth:

Brothers and sisters of the dignified Mapuche people,

The peoples, nations, tribes, and barrios who make up the National Indigenous Congress, the Indigenous Governing Council, and the EZLN send our solidarity and embrace to the family of Mapuche compañero Camilo Catrillanca who was murdered by a Chilean police tactical team during an operation carried out November 14, 2018, in the Temucuicui community of the Araucanía region. We know that the dignified Mapuche people have waged a centuries-long struggle to defend their forests and rivers, and that Chile’s bad government and its police have used repression and deceit in Mapuche territory to try to extinguish the Mapuches’ defense of life.

pamePAME (All Workers Militant Front) that represents the class trade union movement of Greece and MAS (Students Militant Front) that represents the fighting students movement of Greece, express their solidarity with the fight of the Chilean students and we denounce the oppression by the Bachelet Government against the students’ struggle.
